Mighty Morphin Power Companies Google Bought

Google is a household name, and is the Chuck Norris of the search engine community. However, Google also makes it a point to buy companies that are already doing well, and make them even better. The Vice President of Google has stated that at least two-thirds of all the companies they acquire excel or “morph” into even better companies.

Disclaimer – I’m not geeky enough to make real comparisons between Power Rangers and Google, so I’m just taking the logo color. Sorry for the title bait!

Android: The Green Power Ranger

We’ve all seen how well the Android platform has taken off. Android phones make up about 80 percent of the smart phone market share. This is a ridiculously high number.

Google has partnered with a number of cell phone companies and providers to ensure that the platform gets onto the phones. Android was purchased in 2005, and is considered one of the best deals ever for Google.

Even though the operating system itself doesn’t make the company money, as it is given out on the phones for free, it still helps increase the company’s revenue. The built-in search ensures that the majority of people who use the platform also use Google searches. Because of this, the company has increased their ad revenue by about $1 billion per year. Cha-ching!

YouTube: The Red Power Ranger

In 2009, Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion. At the time, it was a big risk for Google – there were copyright issues and potential lawsuits all over the place. Since its purchase, Google has implemented takedown policies, and contracts with content owners which inevitably has stabilized revenue. Bringing in over $1 billion each year, it’s one of Google’s prized properties.

Picasa: The Yellow Power Ranger

While Picasa isn’t making Google the type of money that many of the other companies are, it was a sound purchase for the company. With Picasa, users are able to upload images to be hosted on the web. The image hosting site doesn’t have paid membership and doesn’t run AdWords or affiliate links and you can back up your photos, add them to Google Plus, and more.

Picasa was purchased by Google in 2004. The purchase price for this acquisition was not disclosed. However, the image gallery is a great addition to the other services that Google offers, making it a beneficial purchase by the company.

Motorola: The Pink Power Ranger

Coming in at $12.5 billion, this is one of Google’s largest acquisitions. The purchase was announced in August of 2011 and finalized in May of 2012. Motorola has been in the cell phone business for well over a decade. However, their sales started to drop. Under the guidance of Google, the company is seeing a resurgence. In November 2013, Motorola and Google showed off the Moto G, their newest smart phone.

This phone is set to release in several markets, and is going to be a great, cost effective option for many who see the smartphone industry as too expensive. The phone has a starting price in the United States of only $179, where many smart phones cost well over $500. In addition to this, the phone works on the Android platform, showing the savvy in making their properties compatible with one another.

Double Click: The Black Power Ranger

Waze was purchased by Google in 2013 for $966 million. Currently there is some controversy over the acquisition of this GPS app, and it is being researched by the Federal Trade Commission to discover whether it is against any competition law. However, this Power Ranger is currently owned and being used by Google.

Okay, so Double Click could probably be considered a Green Power Ranger, because of the logo color. However, we already discussed Green, so the next color is black. Double Click has been cited as one of the best purchases Google has made over the years. It’s an online advertising company that was purchased by Google in 2007 for $3.1 billion. While Google doesn’t make perfect use of all the features of Double Click, they certainly have made a go at it.

Google states that they make more than $2.5 billion per year through the company. This is through display advertising and other ad options. Pieces of the company have been used in Google’s own advertising plans, making it not only profitable, but helpful as well. From publishers to advertising agencies, Double Click was doing well before the acquisition, but now it also has the Google name and power behind it.

Waze: The Blue Power Ranger

Waze was purchased by Google in 2013 for $966 million. Currently there is some controversy over the acquisition of this GPS app, and it is being researched by the Federal Trade Commission to discover whether it is against any competition law. However, this Power Ranger is currently owned and being used by Google.

Google has made more than 100 acquisitions in the last several years. Not all of them have been the best purchases, but many have made Google more money and given them more prestige. In addition to this, these companies are thriving under the ownership of Google and will continue to help the parent company in the future.
